Ava Adore
I have recently (yesteray) started to re-kindle my love/obsession with The Smashing Pumpkins. I've been listening to my old CD's, reading through lyrics, and I must say that no one on Earth can write (nee, compose) a better song in the popular genre better than Billy Corgan and his cohorts. Their music was some of the most lush, intense, cereberal, simple, harsh, beautiful music ever written. I've always marveled at Corgan's ability to blend such picturesque lyrical writing with music that compliments his songs so completely.
But yet the lyrics themselves can stand alone as poetry. For example, here is a stanza from "Behold! The Night Mare.":
I've faced the fathoms in your deep
withstood the suitors quiet siege
pulled down the heavens just to please you
appease you
the wind blows, and I know
I can't go on
digging roses from your grave
to linger beyond the beyond
where the willows weep
and the whirlpools sleep
you'll find me
Yes, I know I've been accused of listening to depressing music. There's no denying it...I am guilty as charged. It obviously hasn't affected my outlook on life too much; I'm a pretty upbeat kind of guy. There just seems to be something beautiful in the way people express their darker times. Intense emotion comes out of sadness, and in turn can result in intense creativity.
Albums you should listen to by The Smashing Pumpkins (in this order):
-Adore
-Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
-Siamese Dream
-MACHINA/The Machines of God

Adore is a great album. And the videos they made for it are incredible.
Hm. Maybe I should start listening to S.P. again. And buy their music videos DVD.
That might be pretty darn cool of you to loan me the Pumpkins video. Very darn cool, actually.
