Tomorrow's Headline

Matt Sharp Comes to Eau Claire, Forgets Band

Matt Sharp, former bassist for Weezer and the frontman of the newly resurrected The Rentals played at UWEC tonight. I went to the show thinking, "yeah, this should be good. I love Weezer, I love The Rentals. How could this possibly be bad?"

Words cannot describe.

Here is a short list of grevious mistakes Matt Sharp made during the 4 songs I stayed around to tolerate:

1) Playing Rentals songs on solo acoustic guitar. If anyone has heard the Rentals, they know that their music would not be easily translated to an acoustic solo type performance. The chords and lyrics are fairly simple, and it's the lushness of the sounds the band makes as a whole that makes their music interesting.

2) Not even knowing how to play your own songs.

3) Admitting to the audience to being unprepared for the show

4) Talking at a very slow rate and for a very, very long time

5) Playing songs from an album that came out when most of the audience was in Elementary School and expecting them to recognize it

6) Inviting the audience to sit down on the floor to listen to you be boring

So yes, Matt Sharp was very bad, but I'm sure he'll be good when he remembers to bring his band. On the other hand, everybody go out and hear The Daredevil Christopher Wright. This Eau Claire band is amazing, and I wish I was sticking around long enough to hear them more.

My dear Pat,

You are hilarious! I actually laughed out loud. I love the headline. You should keep me posted on music news in Eau Claire, you could be like my lookout point to the east.

I was sad to hear you won't be coming to Mason Jennings. :( I will tell you how it was. (I am sure it will go something like this: that was awesome!)

Well, I'm glad I didn't go to the concert. I wish I could say that pep band was better than it sounds like Matt Sharp was ... well, it probably was, even though we ran out of time to play the school song (whoops) and I think I delayed the beginning of the 2nd half (double-whoops!). Looks like I'm making a trip to the AD on Monday to apologize ...
