So when I became employed full time for the first time last fall, I decided that one of the rewards of my employment would be the purchase of a new(er) vehicle. I decided that it would be smart to wait until I had accumulated some money for a down payment, and see what my salary can really do before I went making a big mistake.
I have recently decided that the wait is almost over.
For months I've had my heart set on one of these goofy looking things:The Scion xB gets great mileage, is roomy, and looks just goofy enough to suit my personality. However, the more I researched, the more I discovered that there weren't a lot of used Scions out there, and 15-17k for a new one just isn't completely in my price range. Plus, the driver's seat is shorter than normal, making it possibly uncomfortable in the leg department when only half your ass is on the seat.
So, I started to look elsewhere for a car that is roomy, cheap, and can be found in plentiful quantities in used-car lots, with low mileage. In the past couple of weeks, I couldn't help but notice a lot of these tooling around town:This, by the way, is a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser. So, I did some research. Since the model has been around for 5 years, and they've been making a lot, there are a lot of them out there. There are some 200+ on the local used car websites. They are very roomy, good for long trips, and goofy looking. While they don't get the nice mileage that the Scion does, they're no worse than my current Pontiac Grand Am. There are several 06's for sale around here with around 10,000 miles, and selling for under 13k. I have my eyes set on a pretty blue one.
So, during spring break (which is in 2 weeks), my Mom is going to come down for a day, and we're going car shopping. I can finally say goodbye to my Pontiac. Yes, it has been a reliable car, and V6 engine 2-door sport coupes are fun to drive, BUT...it now has almost 129,000 miles on it, and little things are starting to bother it. I have the feeling it would be getting more expensive to keep it running...so I'll hopefully trade it in and make it someone else's problem!

TOASTER!!!!!
eh.... buy a Beetle instead ;)
Haha, word verification: "ygbugyqa" - it's a sign!
Under a strong challenge from the Pontiac Aztec, this holds the title for "Most Ridiculed Car." It looks like a hearse! Please, God, No!
If you want quirky, get a hybrid. Or a Beetle.

When gas is going for near $3 a gallon in many places, good mileage is important. To people who work for their money, anyway. And the xB actually gets as good or better mileage than some of those hybrids that cost way more. Also has traction control, ABS and other safety features STANDARD. But some people would rather go for what their friends think is cool or cute than what actually works for fear that their friends won't approve. Go figure.
P.S. Quirky isn't a reason to get a hybrid. And I haven't been in a Beetle in ages, but I do remember feeling a tad trapped in that back seat. I'd rather have my own door if I'm a passenger in someone else's car.
