You bunt who?

The new year will be an exciting and adventursome one. Last night I embarked into new computing territory and installed Ubuntu Linux on my computer. My hope is to someday rid myself of Windows entirely, but for now I have a dual boot on my lappy. I don't know much about it yet, but what I've seen so far, I like quite a bit. It's visually appealing, clean, and has been very friendly so far in recognizing things on my computer. I am downloading a program called Wine that supposedly lets you run Windows software in Linux, with the hopes of being able to use Finale and SmartMusic in Linux. I'm not banking on it though, especially considering how much of the computer's resources SmartMusic uses...worth a try, though!

In other news, the holidays have been most eventful. I was surprised to receive Guitar Hero III for the Wii for Christmas, and it has been pretty great. I've been running all over the Cities visiting folks, including my mother who went in for surgery (all planned, nothing too serious). I am currently sitting in a Bruegger's in Shoreview, waiting for Alison to be done with church. Afterward, we are headed to the great white north to spend New Year's Eve at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters. I went last year and had a great time, and am greatly looking forward to a return tripo.

Any other Linux users out there wishing to offer their support (or condolences?), feel free. Happy New Year!

You were at the Bruegger's in Shoreview?! You could've walked a couple blocks south and ran into my house :-)

Great to hear Ubuntu installed successfully! Did you end up using Wubi? Wine has a bunch of user forums and many times you can find tips by reading user comments. I would also get comfortable with the Ubuntu forums website http://ubuntuforums.org/ It is an incredible resource. I have also found Ubuntu Geek http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ and this website http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/ to be helpful in fixing issues. If all else fails, google search.

GOOD FREAKING LORD. UBUNTU'S A GREAT CONCEPT, BUT AWFUL ON MY LAPTOP.

- graphics card doesn't work w/ 3d
- can't use special desktop features (to make it look all mac-y)
- wireless blows
- flash doesn't work half the time
- bitpim wouldn't install
- nothing installs w/o command lines
- too easy to mess everything up and need to reinstall
- tough to configure file-type associations (can't say "always open with" for types of files)
- no "double-clickable" .eml files!
- touchpad impossible to configure
- no suspend or hibernate!?!?! why have the option if it doesn't work on 90% of systems!?!?!

this stuff is making me craaaaazy

chris.
