From the newest member of the real world

Well, it's been a week, but I'm still here. Even though I only taught 3 days of classes this week, it feels like a lot more. Every day is a new mystery as I try to figure out how to do things I've had very little training to do. But the nice part is, with every lesson plan I do, I get three chances to get it right. Yesterday, for example, I was doing a lesson with Orff instruments in the 2nd grade classes. In the first class, it bombed completely (in front of the 2nd grade teacher who used to have a music position of her own). The second class went a little better. By the time I walked into the third 2nd grade class, I was greeted by pictures they had drawn saying that I was the best teacher ever, and the lesson went pretty well.

It is terrifying to look any further than a few days ahead, because the enormity of what I have to learn how to do and successfully execute can be a handful when taken in its whole. That is why I am biting off small chunks and taking things a day at a time.

In the meantime, I get free rent & free (awesome) food, get to spend a lot of time with Alison, and I can go to bed whenever I want. On tuesday night I went to bed at 9:30...it was fabulous. The Old Man is finally in his element.

By the way, Wedding Crashers is a terrible movie. Curses to all of you who thought it was hilarious. It sucked big time.

I think today Alison and I are going to go check out the Pond Hockey Championships at Lake Calhoun...should be sweet.

I know what you mean about the big picture being overwhelming. That's a good strategy to take things in small chunks - but don't let it catch up on ya. If you stay ahead of the game, even a little, in that situation it'll work out. It's not the best, but ya make do with what ya got. :-)

Just saw on the news that they announced today that they're cancelling West Wing. BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I guess they made the decision before Spencer died, so that had nothing to do with it - just a lack of ratings over the past year. Did you see it tonight? I thought they were back in their element. And I also think that Vinick is done for and that Santos is a shoe-in now. Woot woot!!
